Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Guiding Light of Alpha Kappa Alpha once said:
To my mind we should all be too busy for petty things, too big for smallness, too intelligent not to see what happens when we stoop to them.

(A)ll of my (L)ove, (P)eace and (H)appiness, I will give to (A)lpha!
For me, being a woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha is more than just being pretty, chanting, strolling, wearing letters, etc. To think that in 1908, at a time where our people didn’t have the freedoms we currently enjoy, at a time when my Founders’ were not only African-American but women, at a time when finishing grade school and attending college was merely an idea, that they could create what would go on to be the oldest Greek lettered organization for African-American women amazes me. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African American women in areas where little power or authority existed due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early 20th century, yet my Founders’ successfully moved mountains.
Our Founders and Incorporators were all women who fought to maintain the ideals of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Striving and doing by culture and merit, scholastic achievement, moral women with high ethical standards, and TRUE SISTERHOOD! They were shining examples throughout their lives of Sisterhood, Scholarship and most importantly Service to all Mankind. The legacy they left is rich with history and full of promise. So to my Sorors, what are you doing for AKA? Being a pretty girl, wearing pearls, throwing pinkies and strolling is all great. But what about the work of Alpha Kappa Alpha?
I am blessed to be apart of such a phenomenal group of women, and immensely grateful for the Original 9, the Sophomores, the Incorporators, the 13 charter members of the Overly Captivating Omicron Chi Chapter, my aunts, cousins, neighbors, friends, line sisters and other members of Alpha Kappa Alpha for paving the way for me! I’ll never be able to say thank you enough!
When I pledged, I committed to Lifelong, ACTIVE and FINANCIAL membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated!

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated!
The originator of politically active women of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Norma Elizabeth Body (my namesake) was a Founder: Sophomore Group in 1908 and Incorporator in 1913. Boyd was an educator in Washington, D.C. public schools for more than thirty years, and expanded her students’ worlds by taking them to Congressional hearings. She was one of the most politically active of the founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha, with interests both domestic and international.
