Thoughts on this? I think many are missing Harry Belafonte’s point. He’s not talking about them giving money. He comes from an era where celebrities used their “celebrity status” to bring about change and make huge impacts in many social justice issues, specifically the Civil RIghts Movement. The likes of Belafonte, Sammy Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and countless others were just as active as the giants and so-called heros of the movement… He’s not asking for people to babysit others children. He’s asking that people use their celebrity status responsibly to benefit the greater good as they did in the 40s, 50s and 60s. For him, it’s not about the money. It’s about the action, or lack of.
but this shit
Jay-Z has been vocal in his support of President Obama’s support of marriage equality. Beyoncé has also publicly endorsed Frank Ocean’s revelation that his first love was a man.
I would think Belafonte is talking about their relationship to the black community. and here we go with the talk of marriage equality. Something that is not going to affect the lives of Black LGBT folks the same way it will white. and How the fuck does Beyonce endorse someone loving someone else lol
I think Jigga and Hov are now grown enough to make decisions about their art and how they would like to use their influence. especially now that they have a lil black girl (we all know the troubles black girls face even when they are relatively wealthy and non-passing)
I hope their art changes doe. but thats wishful thinking…
I mean.. Iono how i feel about this..nevamind..
I agree with you in hoping that they make some changes. I know many believe that they don’t owe anyone anything, but I just feel like with celebrity comes some sort of responsibility. And IMO, Belafonte is referring to their relationships with the black community and issues… I don’t know how them “endorsing” Frank Ocean’s relationship factors into this discussion but whatever…
